I AM/WERE HERE/THERE #2 (2019)

The second instalment of I AM/WERE HERE/THERE (IAWHT) turns its focus to Lee Tung Street, also known as Wedding Card Street, a location that was erased from Hong Kong’s urban landscape in 2007. Shifting from the first instalment’s exploration of memories tied to existing locations, this chapter explore a solidified collective memory surrounding a place that no longer physically exists.

This work examines the complications of remembering a vanished site, where the sentiments of the public form into a relatively stable narrative over time. By reconstructing Lee Tung Street in life-size virtual reality, the project reanimates the lost space, allowing audiences to revisit a location that only survives in memory. The immersive environment, informed by intensive historical research, further interrogates how collective memory evolves when detached from physical reality, and how personal experiences shape—or are shaped by—shared narratives of loss.
